We are taxed about 33 cents on every dollar that we earn.
Which means that we spend about twenty minutes of every workday hour laboring to pay our taxes (and so do you).
We're proud to do it. And we have absolutely no problem paying our fair share into the public pot.
Noted: 33% is about our ceiling of what constitutes "our fair share".
All we ask in return is that our government work as hard as it can to spend our money appropriately - schools, roads, national defense, lighthouses, health care, social safety nets, whatever.
Which is why when CONGRESS PULLS BULLSHIT LIKE THIS WE SEE RED.
From Politico's Print Edition (pulled from Allen's Playbook):
“Hill Democrats Prepare for an Obama Embrace,” By Martin Kady II and Patrick O’Connor: “Expect daily conference calls in which Democratic congressional leaders coordinate message, strategy and policy with the Obama campaign. Watch for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to schedule votes aimed at helping Obama and debates designed to paint Sen. John McCain as just another Republican, marching in lock step with President Bush. In the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is already planning yet another vote on the State Children’s Health Insurance Program — a chance to highlight the fact that McCain is aligned with Bush in opposing bipartisan efforts to expand the popular program.”So the Congress, when it's not on one of its outrageously long "recesses", is going to spend the next 5 months trying to screw John McCain. Which is not a very appropriate way for them to spend their time or our tax dollars

Replace "Capone" with "The U.S. Congress".
Replace "Chicago" with "Washington".
Then ONE won't have any more problems like this.
Noted: For what it's worth, we signed the petition.
